Experience

A qualified mental health practitioner and more...

Multicultural counselling and a trauma-informed approach

I have worked with individuals from over 50 nationalities on a broad range of mental health issues, with a focus on stress      and trauma. I am certified in therapeutic approaches for the treatment of trauma, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and The Rewind Technique.

International experience in the humanitarian sector

My experience with the UN and international organizations, spanning nearly two decades, comprises staff counselling and human resources management. This includes 13 years spent in the Middle East, supporting both international and national staff in complex humanitarian settings (Lebanon, West Bank, Gaza, Jordan and Syria).

Organizational-level interventions and training

As a Staff Counsellor for a large UN agency based in Geneva,

I supported the implementation of the UN Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy, provided counselling to staff worldwide, and led numerous workshops for managers and staff on subjects such as psychological safety, psychosocial risks in the workplace, stress management and wellbeing, empathy-based stress and vicarious traumatization for frontline workers, as well as post-traumatic growth. I have also collaborated with the UN System Staff College (UNSSC) to deliver training to UN staff.

Added value for clients

This combination of experiences has provided me with an intimate understanding of the wellbeing issues and employment conditions of international and national staff working in humanitarian settings. It has also allowed me to become well-acquainted with the operational, management, and regulatory frameworks of international organizations. This enables me to effectively support clients experiencing wellbeing concerns in the workplace by quickly discerning the key issues to ensure relevant interventions.

Individual Counselling

Counselling offers a safe space where the client works with a qualified mental health professional* to uncover the underlying causes to their issues and concerns, and to develop strategies to overcome them. Goals are set around 1) desired behavioral change, 2) improving the client’s ability to establish and maintain relationships, 3) enhancing resilience and the ability to cope, 4) healthy decision-making, and 5) development. The process provides the client with needed support, promotes healing, and leads to personal growth.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy for trauma recommended by the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Psychological Association among others. It is a structured therapy that involves briefly focusing on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (e.g. eye movements, tapping or auditory tones). This leads to a reduction of the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Learn more about EMDR.
